HLKK 22-08-31 R9

Post by olpalon »

Subbota veti jälleen kerran ihan oman shown.

Perustrion träkki löytyy täältä:

Olgalaisilla on muuten hyvä boogie päällä, vaikka vähän vajaalla ovatkin olleet liikkeellä muutaman kerran.

Cage tuossa hyvin summasikin oleennaisen.

The forecast was Northerly 12(14) kts, easing to 10(12) kts towards the night. One hour before the start, the Harmaja reading was N 20(26) kts, so we went out with G3.15 minutes before the start, a cloud passed over, and our wind instruments showed 25 kts of wind. We quickly reefed; many boats had reef 1 already before that. But the cloud had passed and left light and steady Northerly 10 kts, which again became gusty pretty quickly. We opened the reef, but there was no time to change to G1 before the start.

We expected route 1, or more likely, route 2. The RC selected route 2.

We were the 1st boat to cross the starting line. We took the windward side and had an extra few seconds to lift a couple of H-boats. Lassu didn't get the room and passed the green starting mark on the other side - basically, they never started. We didn't have time to check if they returned to cross appropriately and hoped the other boats behind would see that. It seemed that no one cared. Or the adrenaline rush helped to forget the essentials.

We quickly hoisted the spinnaker and were able to sail the [nearly] direct line to the Green mark. We proactively bore away a few times on gusts to avoid broaching. Minnamari and Ariel overtook us and went ahead - Ariel took the outer side under the spinnaker and was pretty quick, while Minnamari under the Genoa went into protection of Varsasaari before they hoisted the spinnaker and was slower. Meanwhile, we changed G3 to G1.

We arrived at the Green mark shortly after Minnamari and Ariel and were well ahead of the rest of the fleet. The wind backed when we were at the mark, and we gybed immediately. Minnamari and Ariel reacted to the wind shift surprisingly slowly. The wind shift allowed us to fetch the next Red stick mark on a straight line.

We luffed at the Red, and we could continue the spinnaker for another few hundred meters, but the wind backed a few degrees more, and we had to change to G1. The rest of the way to the turning point was calm. Lucky Too overtook Sans Rival and was slowly getting closer from behind, while Minnamari and Ariel didn't go too far away.

We rounded the farthest Red stick and continued upwind. It was also pretty quiet until the Red stick mark, where we met the FR1 class rushing down on STBD tack under the spinnakers. The backwind from the fleet was massive. We had to point more than 30 degrees lower and lost a lot of speed there. It looked like, Subbota, Lucky Too, and Sans Rival were affected by the FR1 fleet the most.

The leg to the Green mark was gusts and lulls. Because of the FR1 fleet's backwind at the previous mark, we could not fetch the mark like Minnamari and Ariel did and tacked below it. Lucky Too under G3 drove slightly lower than us and made an extra tack to the mark. Sans Rival was pointing noticeably higher and lost a lot of distance.

We rounded the Green mark and headed straight to the finish line. It was very gusty and, at times, uncomfortable under the G1. Lucky Too was sailing nearby under G3; they didn't point as high as we did and could not overtake us. We finished one boat length ahead of Lucky Too. Our final result was second after Minnamari, to who we lost about 5 seconds.

The winning moves were to react quickly to changing conditions, and the bad luck was to meet the FR1 fleet at the narrowest place. We lost there a lot more than 5 seconds.
