FE83 FR number for 2022

Hi,

The FE83 FinRating value is 0,8324 for 2022 and it was 0,838 in 2021. The FR formula described in paragraph 6.1 of FinRating-sääntö 2021 remains in force since the rules haven't changed. Hence, the ORC data for FE83 has changed - is my assumption correct? Does anyone have a clear insight?

In Avarit's webinar they explained that the ORC's VPP program keeps improving every year and that's why the ratings keep changing from year to year. So my take is that both ORC and FR has changed.

Yes, the VPP keeps improving all the time.

I am wondering,
- we've been critical about the fairness of our FR and nearly every time we get it lower, all closest competitors get it lower, too,
- if all handicaps were changing proportionally, it would have been equal to no change - this is not exactly what we're seeing, but it's close.

I think we are well out of focus when they are improving the rules. The rules are now focused on 45-60 foot yachts I think. So we get what the end result happens to be. Isn't FR still tied to ORC? When You get a FR certificate it's actually an ORC certificate with the FR numbers stamped on. So they are bound to change yearly.

Why? What boat are you comparing to FE?

Note that the FR in the table are and must be inclusive (sails, displacement, crew weight etc.) and thus they will penalise boats that are not exactly as the one used for calculating the FR in the table. However there are some OD classes, like H, for which accurate measurements can be used in the table.

FE83 table FR is not that far from more accurate ratings for individual boats. E.g. using the old accurate data would give 0.8241 for Charlotta and 0.8176 for Merelli. Thus about the same as H (0.8199) as it used to be in LYS.

For some other boats the difference between table and individual FR is much bigger. E.g. for my Bavaria 35 Match table FR is 1.0162 and with real measurements 0.9829. Actually I couldn't even use the table FR, since my boat is only 5684 kg vs. 5942 kg. The other differences are in sails (my main is 1.4 m2 smaller, 28.7 m2 jib vs. 45.8 m2 150% genua and my spinnaker is 7.2 m2 biggger) and crew weight (330 vs. 710 kg).

Note that FR is very different from LYS and some boats are rated very differently to LYS. Partly due to missing data and partly due to totally different method of determining the rating. E.g. boats like Sunwind 26/27, Folkboat, Star and Guyline 3800 have a huge difference to LYS.

One of the clear changes in ORC/FR 2021->2022 was the crew weight. For about ten years the sailing displacement was always calculated with default crew weight. Now it's actual crew weight, which makes boats with low crew weight clearly faster than before. E.g. my boat went with 330 kg from 0.9781 to 0.9829 while with default crew weight (705 kg) it would have gone from 0.9924 to 0.9914. Thus the difference between 330 and 705 kg was 1.5% 2021, but in 2022 it is only 0.9%.
