Keskiviikkokisa 3/2020

Post by Panu » Wed Jun 17, 2020 23:56 pm

Tervehdys

We were four yesterday - Patrik on the bow, Anna in the pit, Masha at the trim and I at the helm. We were in time to the starting line coming on a close reach. Sans Rival was barging between us and the RC vessel, we made a few gentle attempts to lift her. She was pretty unwilling to keep clear of the leeward boat but after a light contact and our protest, she luffed just before the RC vessel and went around. The go-around naturally included one tack and one jibe so she exonerated herself effectively. Eventually, we were good to cross the starting line in a clear lane and with a good speed.

This time it was clear how to "kierretään siten että veneen ura ei muodosta silmukkaa" the nearest mark so we took the right side of the course where it looked windier, and safely left the mark to our port. We passed pretty close to the rocks to which we seem to get closer and closer with the growing confidence that it's deep around them. We saw Sans Rival making a crash jibe - she nearly missed the first mark and also saw that Pikku Myy has boldly left the mark to starboard. Which again raised a discussion in our crew which part of the statement was taking precedence - "kierretään" or "veneen ura ei muodosta silmukkaa", and our opinions split 50/50.

Closing to the green mark we made a mistake by tacking to the layline just a little bit too early to allow Venla with all of her huge sail area to become a danger. Had to point a bit too high for a while to climb up. It slowed down Venla as well since she was not able to point as high as a FE can, but it also slowed us. Nothing remarkable at the green mark rounding and further on to the small red buoy. Hoisted spinnaker right at the mark on port tack and only then gibed. The first round has ended and the second round has started without anything remarkable.

We all the time were slowly closing on Pikku Myy who created a huge advantage by missing the first mark and hence shortening her course. But only until the green mark in the second round where we got Sans Rival just in front of us. We were pointing higher to climb out of their nad air but they interpreted our intentions wrong and decided to sail about 30 degrees off the course taking us there as well. I don't really understand this match-race-style applied to fleet race reality when a boat decided to compete against a single boat in the whole fleet - it cannot bring anyone to victory. But it was the bitter truth - sail off course with clear wind or sail on the course in the back wind. Closer to the red round buoy we ducked, hoisted the spinnaker on port tack, gained an inside overlap and mark room, jibed after the mark and left Sans Rival behind us again. Sans Rival was so much engaged in the "match race" so we heard them shouting "where is the mark, have we passed it or not?!"

The wind was quickly dying during our downwind course to the finish line giving a clear advantage to the faster boats who were finishing earlier. We had to decrease our AWA all the time. We decided to stay in the middle of the open water looking for a clear breeze, especially as many boats from large class coming from behind seemed to be heading to the right side of the course. We were able to keep some speed, gain on Pikku Myy and eventually cross the line one boat length before her. We took it as a clear victory! :D

Eventually, we were 4th in the results table. Small mistakes, dying wind and the "match race" all together effectively kept us away from the top. Nevertheless, it was plenty of fun. Many thanks to the crew and competitors!

Simplifying it a lot. Naturally RRS 28.2 is about string being taut etc. but I guess adding that part is not really needed to explain more.
